Getting to know the Hohner Bravo II 48

Is this the right size for you?

A smaller accordion can be easier to carry, position and manage while you learn. The Bravo II 48 is worth considering for adults and younger players who find a larger instrument cumbersome, or for someone wanting a compact second accordion.

At approximately 4.9 kg, it is lighter than many larger piano accordions. That does not mean it will feel comfortable for everyone. Your build, playing position and strap adjustment all matter, so trying one is helpful if weight is a particular concern.

The right-hand keyboard has 26 keys, running from B to C over a little more than two octaves. It accommodates many tunes and beginner exercises, but some music will need notes outside that range. If you have a particular tutor book or repertoire in mind, we can help you check before buying.

What do the two register switches do?

The treble has two sets of reeds. The register switches let you select one set for a clear, straightforward tone, or both together for a fuller tremolo sound.

It is a simple way to change the character of a tune without adding lots of controls to learn.

What does Silent Key mean?

Hohner redesigned the keyboard mounting to reduce mechanical key noise. You should hear less keyboard clatter, although Silent Key does not mean silent practice. This is an acoustic accordion: the reeds still sound normally, and there is no headphone facility.

Understanding the 48-bass keyboard

The left hand uses the standard Stradella system, with separate bass notes and ready-made chords. Its six rows provide counter-bass notes, fundamental bass notes, and major, minor, seventh and diminished chords.

You can learn the familiar bass-and-chord patterns used to accompany many tunes. Those patterns also carry over to larger Stradella accordions.

The 48-button keyboard covers fewer bass positions than a larger model. If your music needs a wider choice of keys or more right-hand notes, we can help you compare sizes. Being a beginner does not automatically mean you need the smallest instrument.
