On a visit to the Binci workshop in Italy, I asked what makes their reeds so good. The answer was disarmingly simple — “I make them exactly the way I was taught by my father.” That tradition is still followed today. A reed is assembled by hand, the steel tongue carefully riveted to the plate, then tuned precisely on both sides. To demonstrate, Mr Binci made a reed in front of me and, with a small metal stamp bearing a reversed “B”, marked the plate with a tap of a hammer — a moment that captured the pride and continuity of the craft rather than something applied to every reed.
