From Washington DC to the Global Stage
Born on November 6, 1950, in Washington DC, Gil Goldstein’s musical journey is rooted in a deep understanding of composition and theory. He holds a Ph.D. in Music Education from Union Graduate School and is the author of the seminal book The Jazz Composer’s Companion, a staple for students of the genre.
His early career was defined by a pivotal relationship with the legendary Gil Evans. Goldstein became an important disciple of Evans, performing in his band from 1981 until Evans' passing, at which point Goldstein was appointed the band’s musical director.
A Legacy of Arrangement and Production
Goldstein’s genius as an arranger is documented across some of the most critically acclaimed albums of the last few decades. He has lent his sophisticated harmonic language to projects for several world-renowned artists.

One of his most monumental achievements was reconstructing the classic Miles Davis/Gil Evans collaborations for a historic concert in Montreux, Switzerland, under the direction of Quincy Jones. This project solidified his reputation as the primary keeper of the Evans-Davis flame.
The Accordionist: A Voice in World Music
While many know him for his pen, Goldstein is equally expressive through his instruments. As a pianist and accordionist, he has shared the stage with modern jazz giants such as Pat Metheny, Jim Hall, and Pat Martino.
His mastery of the accordion, in particular, has made him a bridge to world music traditions. He has recorded with the leading lights of Spanish Flamenco, Brazilian icons, and French Chanson stars like Juliette Greco. This versatility is a testament to the rich history of the piano accordion in the UK and beyond, proving the instrument's adaptability across every imaginable genre.
Bringing the Sound to the UK
During his upcoming UK tour dates in Scotland with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, audiences will have a rare chance to hear his intricate approach to the instrument live. To support these performances, Squeezebox Marketplace is proud to provide the accordion for his gigs, ensuring this master of the reeds has the perfect tool to bring his compositions to life.
Gil Goldstein on Film and Beyond
His influence extends into the world of cinema, where he has collaborated on film scores with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Pat Metheny. Whether it is the "cream of American popular music"—including work with Paul Simon, James Taylor, and Sting—or avant-garde jazz, Goldstein’s signature is one of elegance, complexity, and profound soulfulness.
